Radka Kushleva

The songs of the Rhodopes are emotional and touching. They also never fail to impress with their melodiousness. The voices of both female and male singers blend harmoniously with the grandness of the mountain.
Radka Kushleva died at the age of 58 in 1984 and left a rich musical heritage. She was called “The nightingale of the Rhodopes”. There were many musicians in her family. Her first recordings for the Bulgarian national Radio were made in 1950. Often she sang with Georgi Chelengirov as well as with her sisters Maria, Anka and Stefka. The four of them were well known as the “Kushlevi sisters” and they made a lot for the popularization of the songs of the Rhodopes. The Kushlevi sisters were the first Bulgarian quartet to perform Bulgarian folk songs without accompaniment.
Rumen Rodopski is from the village of Ladzha. His teacher in music was his mother and his favourite song is “Hero, you are so young and wild”.
One of the most beautiful voices from the Rhodopes region belongs to Hristina Lutova. For 30 years she sang with the ensemble of the town of Smolyan “Rhodopa” and with it she travelled through Europe, Asia and Latin America.
Finally, Mihail Kalfov is famous for his authentic style of playing the bagpipe.
